Everyone Has Mental Health
We all have mental health. However, according to the 2018 Canadian Community Health Survey by Statistics Canada, nearly 18% of Canadians aged 12 and older needed help with their mental health in 2017. Sadly, almost half had their needs partially or fully unmet.
And, according to the 2012 Canadian Community Health Survey – Mental Health (CCHS – MH), one in three Canadians will have a mental health issues at some point in their life.
In other words, even if you aren’t personally dealing with mental health issues, someone you know or love has some type of disorder that affects their mood, thinking, or behavior such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders, or addictive behaviors.
Fortunately, Canada has many resources for people who need them including the Canadian Mental Health Association, Mental Health Commission of Canada, and the Center for Addiction and Mental Health. People dealing with mental health issues, and those wanting to support them can find valuable educational materials there.
Despite all of these resources, mental health remains a widely misunderstood problem. This is why increasing awareness and funding research is so important.
